This original poster from our collection will be mounted, designed and cut into a one-of-a-kind PAR for you. Printed in the early 20th century, this vintage lithograph shows Fort George and the City of New York as depicted in 1736. The artwork as inspired by an engraving in the Library of Congress. We couldn’t find much on the artist I. Carnritham Sculp other than works published in “A Treatise on the Art of Painting” by Gerard de Lairesse from 1817.
Size: 20”x19” - Approx 700 pieces - Fort George, which is now a sub-neighborhood of Washington Heights NY, was built in 1776 and actually the 4th of five different Fort George’s, each of which had been destroyed and abandoned. The first one was built in New Amsterdam in 1626 but wasnt named Fort George until 1714. Most of the original fort was destroyed during battle in the Revolutionary War. Currently the location where the site was is now the Alexander Hamilton US Custom House. We love the history of New York and find it forever fascinating. This is one of those original pieces we look at and think of a more simple yet truly devastatingly difficult time to live.
