Original print by Danish painter Bjørn Wiinblad (1919-2006), designed in 1953 for the Spil Selv Music Festival. This work depicts a lady in a flower adorned hat playing a pipe that wraps around her body with stylized letters that read “Music must be played yourself”.
Artist, Wiinblad was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. He attended drawing school at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen from 1940 to 1943 where he studied painting and illustration. He created ceramics and used materials such as silver and bronze and textiles in his works. He was honored and named Man of the Year in New York in 1985 and was awarded the American-Scandinavian Foundation’s Cultural Prize in 1995.
Our design will likely include the surrounding white border of our subject, just tightened up against her in order to offset the dark colored blues throughout. It will marry nicely with the white within her chair and hat where the lettering flows. Spil Selv will hang off the bottom edge halfway, with the white straight line going through its center acting as the bottom edge halfway through the lettering. Just some initial thoughts for you.
